Volunteer Spotlight - Karen Charen

This month's volunteer spotlight shines on Karen Charen, one of our dedicated Monday receptionists! A long-time visitor of the Raptor Trust, she moved to NJ in 1985 and quickly became an admirer of our mission. Over the years, she has brought her children, Girl Scout troops, and many friends, hoping to inspire the same appreciation for birds, nature, and the environment. Karen enjoys learning something new every week and assisting the staff, while also educating the public. She says, “There's something truly special about seeing the birds up close and personal. It's a privilege I never take for granted.”

Karen’s favorite bird is the American Kestrel, especially our small but mighty resident, Ollie, who has captured her heart with his beautiful plumage and distinctive markings. Ollie captures the hearts of many – not just Karen!  He is a wonderful ambassador for Kestrels and for The Raptor Trust, helping visitors appreciate these amazing raptors and the work being done at TRT. After retiring from her 40-year-long career as a physical therapist, we were lucky to have her join our organization, where she now contributes to the rehabilitation and care of injured birds. Although the patients may be different, the opportunity to support the healing process and make a meaningful difference is just as rewarding for Karen. Thank you for all you do! TRT would not be the same without your generous heart and passion for these birds :)
